Two years ago today I started The Purple Pumpkin Blog with this post. I started out blogging about our Halloween party in 2011, with the view to blog about various parties and events that I threw at home for family and friends.
To celebrate my blog turning 2 (I complete missed my 1st blogiversary!) I’m going to be taking a look back at the evolution of my blog!
I searched the Way Back Machine to find old versions of my blog which brought back memories of how it used to look! This is the earliest version I could find from February 2012…it’s fun to look at old versions of the site and see how it has developed over the years! The blog back then was called “The Purple Pumpkin” without the word ‘blog’ attached, and my strapline was “Where parties are planned…”
After a while, I realised that I probably couldn’t just blog about parties – my husband’s wallet couldn’t take it every week!! Although, I’d already been blogging different recipes and crafts, I then came up with a strap line – Cook, Craft, Create. I felt it brought together everything that I would be blogging about. I had a few different themed days – Sunday Inspiration, Make It Mondays and Flashback Fridays, but slowly, they feel to the wayside. I also threw regular Link Parties, but again, with time not my friend, I eventually stopped hosting them, (apart from a few special themed parties, e.g., the recent Crafty October Linky
Eventually, it was a complete overhaul of my blog design as I became more confident with my purpose as a blogger and because I wanted to put some individuality into the design, rather than relying on the standard template. I became The Purple Pumpkin Blog, created a new logo, added “connect” to my strap line.
I started sharing my trip reports and more of my photography and was even shortlisted for a Brilliance in Blogging Lifestyle Award, which I was over the moon about. I got to meet other bloggers at Brit Mums and made a lifelong friend in one of them :)
After Brit Mums, I decided to look again at my blog design and again, tinkered with the layout. At this point I thought it was probably a nice idea to screencap my blog so I would be able to remember what it looked like, so here is a full length shot of how the blog looked at the start of July 2013 before I changed it completely.
The strap line I came up with quite early on in my blog’s life “Cook, Craft, Create, Connect” still remained, but I also added Travel and Photography sections. I started to index my recipes making them easier to find, I also indexed my crafts and parties. I started to work more with various brands and going to blogger events, which is always very exciting!
What you see each time you visit me at The Purple Pumpkin Blog, is the most up-to-date layout, and right now, I’m still as happy with it as I was when I came up with the design back in the summer. I am likely to change the images very soon – just haven’t had the time to do it! But the overall look and feel of the blog is going to stay the same for the foreseeable future – if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!
I’ve watched my blog grow from a few hundred unique visitors a month, to over 20,000 unique visitors and counting! I’m amazed that what started out as a place for me to journal my ideas (I still see my blog as a huge online diary!) was even read by other people other than my friends and family! Now I have readers from all over the world, and looking at my blog statistics is always a lot of fun for me (I’m a stat geek!) to see where you all are reading my lil’ blog from.
I have, as always, lots of ideas and plans for my blog. I want to index a lot more of it into easy to find sections. My archives are filled with over 1300 posts including recipes, crafts, photographs, parties and so much more! Even I struggle sometimes to find the things I want on my blog, and even though the search works great, I’d still like to be a bit more organised.
I am not as good a forward planner as I thought I was – I have the ideas yes, but often don’t put them into practise until quite late in the day, I mean, I should have thought about this post weeks ago, but nope, I am writing it the day before, and that’s only because I’m out tomorrow, otherwise I’d be writing it tomorrow..today…! I haven’t even begun to think about Christmas yet, but as a blogger who does a lot of posts about the various holidays during the year, I really should be thinking about Easter by now!!
