Chinese New Year Paper Hand Fans

Gold RoosterThese Chinese Paper Hand Fans make a pretty decoration, and/or a place holder at a dinner party – and you could also give them as party favors.

I’ve used my gold rooster design in these printables, since 2017 is the Year of the Rooster (here are 2016’s Year of the Monkey hand fans), as well as providing a plain red and gold fan, and another with Chinese lettering which wishes happy new year (at least, I hope that the website that I copied the text from is correct!!)

You can make smaller, single fans, or you can join three of those fans together to make a large semi-circular fan, as shown in the images in this post. Either way, they are so simple to make, and you only need a couple of craft supplies. I’ve supplied 2 sizes of printable – A4, and 8.5 x 11″.

Since I will be sharing several free printables for Chinese New Year, make sure you are subscribed so that you don’t miss out!

Instructions – small fan

  1. Print off your preferred design, and cut the white border off.
  2. Fold concertina fashion – about 1cm widths.
  3. Punch holes at the bottom end – you can only do a few at a time, so make sure you line them up as best you can.
  4. Thread the raffia (or red ribbon, or wool) through and tie a double knot to secure. Cut off any excess raffia.
  5. Fan out, and you’re done!

Instructions – large fan

  1. You will need three sheets of the printable per fan. They can be the same design, or you can mix them, like I did.
  2. Follow steps 1 – 3 above.
  3. If you are using different designs, decide which will be the middle section, if using the same design, it doesn’t matter.
  4. Apply double sided tape (or glue) to down the outside length of the middle fan, on both the left and right side.
  5. Carefully attach another fan to this sticky one, and allow to dry if using glue.
  6. Thread raffia (or red ribbon, or wool) through all of the holes, tie a double knot to secure. Fan out.
  7. To make a tassel, you can simple cut a bunch of raffia lengths and tie around to secure.

I really do love hand fans – even this simple paper one, and love how the large one turned out. It wasn’t until I started making the single ones, that it dawned on me to stick them together to make the large one. I see a new printable for future seasonal events here!
