Thank you to Michelle for letting me post here at The Purple Pumpkin Blog! A lot of Essex has a less than amazing reputation but I think it’s all about knowing where to look. Hopefully my guide to things to do in Southend for free will hope you find some fun ways to spend time there!

things to do in southend for free

1. Go Geocaching

Geocaching is essentially the modern day treasure hunting and is great fun no matter what your age! There are lots to find in Southend, check out their website to find the nearest one to where you are.

2. Visit a Museum

Both Southchurch Hall and Southchurch Priory are free to visit and a great way to find out about what Southend was like in the past. We visited Southchurch Hall as a family and had a great time, it’s also the place where I got married! Both museums are in parks so kids can run off some energy outside too.

3. Photograph Beach Huts

Personally I can’t see beach huts and keep my camera in my pocket! The best ones are on the seafront in Thorpe Bay.

4. Watch a band in the park

Southchurch Park regularly has bands playing in their bandstand and it’s a lovely way to chill out on a weekend listening to some jazz, swing or classical music. You can bring a picnic or it’s next to a small cafe if ice lollies are more you requirements.

5. Be inspired at the Art Trail

Leigh on Sea hosts a fantastic art trail every year showcasing local talent. There are normally activities for kids too.

6. Hunt for a Yarn Bomb

Yarnbombing is big in Southend with The Craft Club and The Happy Hookers both regularly brightening up the town. You can check out the Christmas yarnbomb in Leigh on Sea on my blog as well as the Southend Valentines yarnbomb which had a great Shakespearean theme!

7. Play beach volleyball

There’s a net near Southend Marine Activities Centre so why not give it a go?!

8. Walk the sculpture trail

The sculpture trail in Belfairs wood is a massive hit with my son and I have to say that I love it too! You can pick up a map for free in the visitors centre and then wander through the woods hunting for badgers, the green man and woodcutter and many more!

9. Admire the paragliders

Take a trip down to the beach at Thorpe Bay, and sometimes East Beach or Chalkwell on a windy day and you could be treated to the site of people out on their paragliders. Personally I’d love to give this a go but ouch at the cost! For now watching is good enough for me, plus I get to keep dry!

10. Check out some folk bands

Leigh on Sea has the biggest free folk festival in Europe. It can get a bit busy but the atmosphere is great and its a lovely way to spend an afternoon out in the sunshine.
