Today’s movie is [another!] one of my favourites, and possibly the one that makes me laugh the most – The Emperor’s New Groove.

The Story…

The film tells the story of the 18 year old Emperor Kuzco, the selfish ruler of the Incan Empire. He is used to getting his own way in every single aspect of his life, and summons Pacha, the leader of a nearby village to tell him that he will be destroying said village to make way for his summer house – Kuzcotopia. Pacha tries to object, but is dismissed…

Yzma, Kuzco’s recently fired advisor begins to angrily plot her revenge against the Emperor, and decides to poison him with the help of her sidekick – Kronk. However, Kronk the wrong potion was picked up, and Kuzco is turned into a llama! Kronk knocks him over the head, rendering him unconscious and Yzma orders him to dispose of Kuzco. Kronk begins to follow orders, but then after some soul searching and losing the sack which contained the out cold Emperor, lies to Yzma…

Kuzco and Pacha cross paths again, and Pacha agrees to help him get back to his palace, if he doesn’t destroy his village. Kuzco does not want to agree so tries to make his way through the jungle, getting himself trapped by a pack of panthers – Pacha saves him, and the story follows their journey.

Meanwhile, Kronk confesses to Yzma that Kuzco is not dead, and they go off in search of him.

On a rest stop at the Mudka’s Meat Hut Diner, Pacha overhears Yzma discussing her plans to kill Kuzco. Pacha tries to warn him, but he doesn’t want to listen…you’ll have to watch the full movie to find out what happens!!

Here’s the trailer!

And my favourite scene in the whole film!

The Statistical Stuff…

  • released in 2000
  • 40th animated feature in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series
  • nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song for “My Funny Friend and Me” performed by Sting
  • was altered significantly over six years of development and production from its original concept as a Disney musical epic entitled Kingdom of the Sun
  • a direct-to-video sequel, Kronk’s New Groove, was released in December 2005, followed by an animated television series, The Emperor’s New School, in January 2006.
  • almost completely devoid of musical numbers. It is the first Walt Disney Feature Animation film since 1990’s The Rescuers Down Under not to be a musical, and the start of a larger trend where the studio began to move away from musicals.

The Cast…

  • David Spade – Emperor Kuzco
  • John Goodman – Pacha
  • Eartha Kitt – Yzma
  • Patrick Warburton – Kronk
  • Wendie Malick – Chicha
  • Bob Bergen – Bucky the Squirrel
  • Tom Jones – the Theme Song Guy

Why I love The Emperor’s New Groove…

  • the cast – they are all just brilliant, and brilliantly funny. Eartha Kitt is perfect as the evil Yzma, and David Spade’s sarcastic voice works fantastically as the selfish Emperor Kuzco!
  • it’s hilarious – and I mean, laugh out loud, tears in your eyes hilarious. I mean, that might just be me, but it is definitely one of the funniest Disney animated movies!
  • the waterfall scene – watch above! I don’t know why it’s so funny, but it cracks me up!
  • Kronk – he’s so stupid, yet so loveable – even as an evil sidekick! He just wants to be a cook dammit!
  • Pacha, Chicha and their children – such a loving family unit! And the two children are so funny!
  • the theme song – Tom Jones is the theme song guy – what could be more awesome than that?

Have you see The Emperor’s New Groove? What do you love about it?!
