It’s no secret that I like to throw a party, and I really love fancy dress parties! However, as a plus size girl my whole life, buying a ready-made costume has always been a bit of a nightmare, and I’ve resorted to putting together my own costume using bits and bobs from my own wardrobe. Sometimes, I just wish I could buy (or even hire) a costume in a plus size, but they seem to be few and far between.

Jokers’ Masquerade got in touch with me and asked if I’d like to review one of their fancy dress costumes, and the first thing I did before saying yes was check out their website to see if they sell plus size costumes.

I’m currently a size 28/30, and I was a bit gutted to see that there were no size 28 costumes – the size seems to be bypassed altogether! There is size 4 all the way up to size 32, but no size 28. I didn’t want to take my chances with a size 26, so I selected to search for women’s costumes size 30 and two came up – a devil and a pirate. Since I’d quite like to throw a pirate themed party, I thought I’d choose that one!

There were 3 pieces to the pirate costume – the white bodice, black skirt with red stripe overlay comes as a dress, there is the waistcoat and a headband. Of course, to set this outfit off you’d need yourself a cutlass and some gold jewellery!

I’m quite short (5′ 4″) and the dress sat below my knees. The whole outfit had a good stretchy quality to it. It wasn’t a struggle to get into, and in fact, I reckon I could have probably gone down a size on the dress. The waistcoat, not so much, since I’m a busty chick!! I really liked the ensemble and would feel completely comfortable at a fancy dress party in this outfit. It costs £35.99.

My only gripe is with the manufacturers of these costumes…they don’t [seem to] think that plus size people want to party or dress up. In the size 26 category there are 23 costumes, compared with 2 in sizes 30 and 32!

That said, if you’re not plus size, you’ll have no problem finding a costume on the Joker’s Masquerade website, as there are hundreds of them to choose from!

The website is really well organised into categories for you to browse through: adults, kids, teens, followed by Halloween (the best time of year to dress up!!), occasions, accessories, wigs and masks. Then there are different genres to search through, for example, 1960s, historical, couples.

You can also refine searches by gender, size and budget as well as other parameters.

As far as a fancy dress website goes, this really is a one stop shop and I’ve loved browsing through it! I might not have lots of costumes at my disposal (although, that will change as I continue to lose weight!) but I do have all the different accessories to consider – wigs, make up, shoes, contact lenses, hats, gloves…I know where I’m going to be looking this Halloween when big party time rolls around again for me!!
