Welcome to Day 13 of Crafty October – a month of Halloween ideas at The Purple Pumpkin Blog! Don’t forget to check out last year’s ideas if you need more inspiration.

What have I been up to today? Well, today, hubby has helped me to make Caramel Candy Apples! We managed to get these made in minutes – no excuses not to make your own candy apples this Halloween!

There is no faffing around having to make caramel, as it’s as easy as melting a bag of Werther’s Originals and coating the apples with the melted sweets!

With two 135g bags of Werther’s Originals, I was able to cover 4 apples. The key to these being successful is working very, very quickly!

Skewer lolly sticks into the tops of your apples.

Unwrap all the Werther’s Originals and place in a microwave proof bowl or jug. Heat for 1 – 3 minutes (in 1 minute bursts) until all of the candy has melted.

Dunk an apple all the way down into the melted caramel and give a twirl as you pull it out. Quickly tap off the excess and add your choice of topping. I found it easier to pour the topping into a bowl and press the candy apple into it. I added the candy corn one by one, pressing them into the apple.

Once you have decorated your apple, put it onto a baking sheet covered with greaseproof paper to set.

You should be able to dunk the next apple into the caramel, but if you can’t, just pop it back in the microwave to re-melt again and make the dunking of your apples easier.

To decorate my caramel candy apples I used candy corn, chopped hazelnuts and Halloween sprinkles. I then tied a piece of ribbon around the lolly stick.

You could use apple wedges to make these a great party food – the wedges of apple will go a lot further than whole ones! Use a wooden chip fork to dunk the pieces and present them on a platter.

I feel like I’m always saying this, but these Caramel Candy Apples were so easy to make! I hope you give them a try!

I am hosting a month long Halloween Link Party to celebrate Crafty October and would love for you to share your Halloween ideas – crafts, recipes, costumes, parties…anything goes, as long as it is family friendly!
