Today I’ll be sharing Day Three of our weekend in Bruges, Belgium. Carrying on from Day One and Day Two and concluding our short break. I organised this trip as a surprise for my hubby’s 40th Birthday gift – Around theWorld: A Year of Dates.

I won’t share all the photos here (I took lots!) but you can view the whole set from our trip on my Flickr.

Weekend in #Bruges, Belgium - Trip Report

Our final day in Bruges was a Sunday and we woke up to dry weather which was a good start! We enjoyed another lovely breakfast served by our host and whilst eating, decided what we should do for the day until we had to make our way back to Brussels to catch the Eurostar back to London.

We wanted to take a look inside The Church of Our Lady, but as it was a Sunday, mass was taking place so we wouldn’t be able to go there until early afternoon.

We also wanted to go and have a hot chocolate and a waffle before going home, as well as a final walk around the city. So that was the plan! We packed up our bags and signed out of our guest house, and the owner kindly allowed us to leave our luggage there so we wouldn’t have to drag it about the city with us!

We found a church which we hadn’t seen before, the name of which escapes me now. Again, a service was going on, so we walked around and into the shopping area.

After a few hours, we stopped in a restaurant called ‘t Mozathuys for a hot chocolate and a waffle…I had my chocolate with amaretto and hubs with rum…wow…blow your head off time!!!!!

After our sweet lunch break we walked back along the canals and round another way to The Church of Our Lady. There is so much to explore as we were discovering places we hadn’t seen on our previous days! Maybe next time we’ll go in Spring or Summer so that we can go on a canal boat.

We eventually ended up around the back of the church and found some statues that we had passed the day before on our horse and carriage ride. They were sculptures of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

There were a few walking tours going on around us in various languages, and we heard one of them point out to her group the smallest bridge in Bruges, along with the smallest window in Bruges (in The Church of Our Lady).

The church still wasn’t open to visitors, so we hung around in the general area for a while and then decided to take go inside the old St. John’s Hospital (across the road) instead of just wasting time! We were clock watching so as not to miss our train connections! No photographs allowed inside the hospital which we paid I think about 8 Euros each to enter. Some very interesting art work and statues inside.

Eventually, the church was open to visitors and we went inside, paying 4 Euros each. Photographs were allowed in here, and I’m so pleased as the church is beautiful inside and I can share that with you…although, the photos do not do the place justice at all. To read more about the history, you can read the Wiki page about The Church of Our Lady.

The church is home to a white marble sculpture of Madonna and Child, created by Michaelangelo in around 1504.

Eventually, it was time for us to be making a move back to Den Witten Leeuw to pick up our luggage and make our way to the train station. By now the weather started to turn and the rain began to fall…a good cue to say goodbye to beautiful Bruges.

We walked back to the station a different way and were sad to leave – we both had such a wonderful time!

The journey back to Brussels was simple – one train, but we made the mistake of sitting in first class and were moved on by the very stern train conductor! We found some seats and chatted whilst the hour journey took place. Arriving in Brussels, we had a little time to waste, so found somewhere to grab a sandwich and hung out in the station. I have to say, Brussels station did not feel like the safest of places to be – and I’m a Londoner! I couldn’t wait to board the Eurostar back to Britain!

We arrived back home to London St. Pancras and found that the tube line we needed was out of service so did have to do some mucking about to get back to my parent’s house to pick up Liam (who wasn’t feeling very well :() and got home around 9:30pm.

We can’t wait to be able to go back again one day – it is such a wonderful place, and if you ever get the chance to visit…go! You will not be disappointed!
