Going out to the cinema is an expensive night out in the UK – for the three of us to go out to the pictures, it costs close to £30 – and that’s just for the ticket to see the film! Throw on an extra tenner if we want to see it in 3D! Add in some drinks and snacks (another £30 if we all have popcorn and a drink), plus a car parking fee; and if we have a bite to eat – that’s one expensive night out!

So, instead of going out to the cinema, we have At Home Movie Nights, where we get in the snacks like we’re at the movie theatre, choose a couple of DVDs to watch, turn out the lights, turn on the surround sound and enjoy the film! We save so much money! Okay, so we don’t get to see the very latest movie, but, these days stuff comes to DVD so quickly, it really isn’t a big deal.

Saturday was one of our movie nights, and having picked out two classic 80s films to watch, I got everything ready for a fun At Home Movie Night!

I made a poster showing what films we would be watching – I also found the fonts for both of those films which I was then able to use. I’m sure I could have just found the titles online and pasted them in – but where’s the fun in that?!

I also made some old fashioned movie ticket stubs, and gave one each to my husband and son, saying “no ticket, no entry”!! You can download and print your own movie ticket stubs and food labels with my free printables.

You can watch a movie without some popcorn! So I made some mini popcorn boxes and filled with salty and sweet popcorn that I had in my snack stash box. Yes, I have one of those :P These popcorn boxes will be shared as part of Crafty October!

I popped (no pun intended!) a ticket stub into each box of popcorn, and they were placed on the side so we could all grab a box!

Big bags of chocolate – especially Minstrels are always on sale at cinemas in the UK, and since I had several different bags of chocolates in my snack stash, I decanted them into red cups and added some labels that I designed, printed out and stuck to the front of the cups.

Snacks are all well and good, but we did actually need to have some dinner on Saturday night, so I went for the savoury cinema food – hot dogs and nachos!

I set up a hot dog bar in the living room, since we’d all be in there watching the film and would save us having to go out into the kitchen and pause the movie…although, that is a perk of having an At Home Movie Night, because you can do that!

I’m fascinated that in the US they have so many different toppings on their hot dogs, yet in the UK we tend to put a bit of ketchup/mustard and throw on some fried onions – boring lol! – so I laid out different toppings for our hot dogs – chilli, pickles, onions, slaw, mushrooms, tomatoes, relish and sauces. We heated up some frankfurters on the stove top, and kept everything that needed to be kept hot, on our heat tray.

With everything ready, we settled down to watch the double feature, and whilst watching such classic 80s films that both hubs and I love, it dawned on me, how old the films must look to my 13 year old! It must be like us watching classic 40s & 50s films! That was my weird moment of the night!

So for the bargain basement cost of about £20 for dinner and snacks, we had a great night in at our own at home cinema!

I can’t wait for us to have another At Home Movie Night together – it gives us all a break and a chance to have time together as a family, and that’s always a good thing ♥
