I’m in the process of a new Flashback Fridays series of our trip to Orlando, Florida in August 2011, and I just love reminiscing over that holiday, because it truly was one of the most awesome family holidays we’ve had!

We were all looking forward to trying new foods out there and one of the breakfasts I was looking forward to trying was ‘biscuits and gravy’. I watch a lot of American cookery programmes and this one often comes up! For a long time I wondered what on earth this was because to me, as a Brit, a biscuit is a sweet pastry (like a cookie!) that you dunk into hot tea, and gravy? Well, you pour it over your roast dinner!! I then learned that biscuits are similar to savoury scones and the gravy is a white sauce made with sausage meat and herbs.

Whilst out there we bought a lot of American food products to bring home with us – so much so we actually bought another suitcase to bring everything home! (This did include a lot of foodie gifts for friends and family, so not all for us!!) And one of the things we brought back were packet mixes of biscuits and gravy!

It’s taken just over a year for us to actually make these packets up! Of course, I’m going to document such a momentous occasion, and whilst they’re never going to taste as good as a homemade variety, they filled that “we’re missing America” gap!

Mmmm…biscuits and gravy! (and scrambled eggs!)

This is how I made packet mix Biscuits & Gravy!

Dump biscuit mixture into a bowl. Add water.
Biscuits & Gravy
Stir until combined and it comes to a dough.

Roll onto a floured surface and cut into rounds
Biscuits & Gravy
Place on a buttered baking sheet and brush with melted butter to give a nice crusty crust

All cooked and golden and lovely!

Make the gravy by dumping the mix in a saucepan. Add water. Or add milk and water to make gravy more creamy.

Whisk over the heat until thickened.

Pour gravy over biscuits, have three if you’re greedy, like us :P

Have on their own, or with sausage, or bacon, or eggs… just enjoy them!! I know we did :D

As I said, I plan on making my own, from scratch, at some point…it’s on my “to-cook” list…the first time I can think about making them is Christmas Day breakfast….I’m putting myself on a super strict diet from now until the end of the year as I’ve been a little piggie this year compared with last!
