So last night was the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games…as a born and bred Londoner, it made me proud, of both my capital city, and of my country.

We all thoroughly enjoyed the show, which was quintessentially British, and watching the way they brought the whole thing together gave me a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye. I especially loved the lighting of the Olympic Flame, which, instead of getting a famous figure to light it, they chose young people, who were sponsored by British Olympians to old the final torches and light it. It was in keeping with the motto of “Inspire a Generation” and to watch as the petals each lit up, and then rose to form a giant flame was amazing.

The fireworks were spectacular, and we could hear them from where we live (about 15 miles away)!  Insane!  Some bits, I’m sure people wouldn’t get, but we were laughing at Mr. Bean, and cheering on our Queen as she ‘jumped’ out of the chopper with James Bond.  To see David Beckham drive the boat down the River Thames was lovely, especially as he wasn’t picked for the Team GB football squad…and even I could forgive the closing number – ‘Hey Jude’ by Paul McCartney :P  (I really can’t stand the song lol)

Thank you Danny Boyle, and all of the thousands of people who brought a great spectacle to the newly regenerated East of London, where I grew up.

As you will know, if you are a regular reader of The Purple Pumpkin Blog, I planned a party to celebrate…I’ll be posting all about it in the coming days!
